Picking out, validating and improving slow or resource-eating SQL statements is part of any responsible DBA’s work who takes his/her job serious. Identification alone can be tough, but it will be even harder to improve something you have no chance to understand the purpose of. This way, you will never be in the position to improve elapsed time by factors of 1 million or 100.000 – that’s a privilege of the designers and coders. But there is a generic way for us database whisperers to approach bad-behaving SQL, and improve it by factor 2, 5 or 10. Sometimes this is all we will get, so let me show you how: We are avoiding expensive tools, voodoo features, concatenated heuristics and one-engine-fixes-the-other. An unspectacular, real-world, common-sense approach, reaching the goals with grassroots technology.

Ein Blue Friday bei der esentri AG ist ein Tag angefüllt mit Arbeit, die Spaß macht! Das durften unsere Oracle-Experten Benedikt Nahlovsky und Martin Klier am vergangenen Freitag, 18.März 2016, in Ettlingen am eigenen Leib erfahren. Rund alle sechs Wochen steht dort einen ganzen Freitag lang nicht Rocken im Projekt im Vordergrund – sondern die Diskussion darüber, ob das Team mit den richtigen Mitteln auf das rechte Ziel zusteuert. Performing Databases lieferte hier passende Impulse zur Performance – nicht nur im Datenbankumfeld: Martins Vortrag “Performance is rarely an accident” stellte Mittel und Wege vor, um Anwendern ein gutes Nutzungserlebnis zu bieten. Das Ziel ist, dadurch vom Markt als exzellenter Partner wahrgenommen zu werden. Zitat: “Gute Performance beginnt im Kopf!”
Im weiteren Verlauf der Veranstaltung im Barcamp-Stil gab es unter anderem einen Crashkurs in Oracle Datenbank Architektur mit dem Ziel, einen Überblick über potentielle Bottlenecks im Laufzeitverhalten von Datenbankaufrufen zu gewinnen. Das relationale Datenbanksystem bietet vorrangig Sicherheit für Daten und Strukturen, es hilft Applikationen, langfristig ihren Datenbestand sauber und konsistent zu halten. Um diese “nebenbei gelieferte Kernfunktion” leistungsfähig zu machen und zu erhalten, existiert ein breites Spektrum an Maßnahmen auf Anwendungs- als auch Administrationsseite. Die Grundlage dafür ist das Verständnis beider Welten, und genau an der Stelle setzt die Philosophie von “Performing Databases” an.

The new In-Memory-Option of the Oracle Database is widely talked about. But how do the In-Memory components of the database really work? Is In-Memory really so transparent as we are told? And why/why not?
This lecture has its focus on “the idea behind” and is intended to be understandable for less experienced or part-time DBAs.
Learn, why using In-Memory Column Store is more or less beneficial for various access paths or usage profiles. Gain a basic expertise do decide if or if not to use this technology.

One of the best ways to learn new technology is with hands-on experience. During this workshop you will have an opportunity to set up Oracle 12c Real Application Cluster environment on your laptop, go through advanced RAC related setup scenarios or work together with other technical geeks on solving RAC related challenges. Experienced RAC Attack volunteers (ninjas) will help you address any related issues and guide you through the setup.
The Oracle Magazine featured our co-founder, Senior DBA Consultant and Oracle ACE Martin Klier in its “peer-to-peer” column of the January/February 2016 issue.
Introducing Martin along with two other renowned technicians – Alex Zaballa and Gustavo Gonzalez – the feature was titled “Firsts and Favorites – Three peers who started early, stayed loyal, and stuck to tech basics”. October 27th 2015 Martin Klier talked a quick TED at the Oak Table World 2015 in the Children’s Creativity Museum, San Francisco. The title was “Volkswagen for Oracle Guys”.
It was a twinkle-in-the-eye comparison of two companies, countries, concepts and styles, combined with a pledge to all IT folks to take their responsibilities seriously.
