Oracle Lifetime Support Policy Changes

By effect of Februar 2nd, 2017 Oracle changed the lifetime support policies regarding Database 11.2.0.4 and 12.1.0.2:

11.2.0.4 Extended Support

Ends: Dec-2020
Extended Support fees are waived from Jan-2015 to 31-Dec-2018
See Oracle Software Technical Support Policies – look for „Exceptions“ in Section 3 – Lifetime Support Policy.

Patching for 11.2.0.1 ended on 13/Sep/2011
Patching for 11.2.0.2 ended on 31/Oct/2013
Patching for 11.2.0.3 ended on 27/Aug/2015 – See Note:742060.1

12.1.0.2 Extended Support

Ends: Jul 2021

Extended Support fees are waived for the period of August 2018 – July 2019.
See Oracle Software Technical Support Policies – look for „Exceptions“ in Section 3 – Lifetime Support Policy.

Patching for 12.1.0.1 ended on 31-Aug-2016

Summary

Customers now can operate 11.2.0.4 until end of 2018 without extra support cost, as long as they have a valid „Software, Update License and Support“ contract.

As of today, 12.1.0.2 is only under regular-cost support for 6 months more. If 12.2.0.1 is really released for on-premises March 15th, that should do.

Picking out, validating and improving slow or resource-eating SQL statements is part of any responsible DBA’s work who takes his/her job serious. Identification alone can be tough, but it will be even harder to improve something you have no chance to understand the purpose of. This way, you will never be in the position to improve elapsed time by factors of 1 million or 100.000 – that’s a privilege of the designers and coders. But there is a generic way for us database whisperers to approach bad-behaving SQL, and improve it by factor 2, 5 or 10. Sometimes this is all we will get, so let me show you how: We are avoiding expensive tools, voodoo features, concatenated heuristics and one-engine-fixes-the-other. An unspectacular, real-world, common-sense approach, reaching the goals with grassroots technology.

Objective 1: Understand the basic components of parsing SQL in Oracle Databases
Objective 2: Pick the culprit, understand its execution plan
Objective 3: Weed them out, avoid collateral damage.

The Bad One In Your Crop – SQL Tuning Analysis For DBAs

Martin Klier, Senior DBA Consultant

4:30 PM–5:30 PM Apr 11, 2016 (Session #4262)

Oracle Core: 12c InMemory Column Store

Martin Klier, Senior DBA Consultant

3:30 PM–4:30 PM Apr 12, 2016 (Session #4927)

The new In-Memory-Option of the Oracle Database is widely talked about. But how do the In-Memory components of the database really work? Is In-Memory really so transparent as we are told? And why/why not?

This lecture has its focus on „the idea behind“ and is intended to be understandable for less experienced or part-time DBAs.

Learn, why using In-Memory Column Store is more or less beneficial for various access paths or usage profiles. Gain a basic expertise do decide if or if not to use this technology.

RAC Attack Workshop

Martin Klier, RAC Attack Ninja 🙂

All Sunday, April 10, 2016 (Event Details and Prerequisites)

One of the best ways to learn new technology is with hands-on experience. During this workshop you will have an opportunity to set up Oracle 12c Real Application Cluster environment on your laptop, go through advanced RAC related setup scenarios or work together with other technical geeks on solving RAC related challenges. Experienced RAC Attack volunteers (ninjas) will help you address any related issues and guide you through the setup.

Oracle Magazine Featuring Martin Klier

The Oracle Magazine featured our co-founder, Senior DBA Consultant and Oracle ACE Martin Klier in its „peer-to-peer“ column of the January/February 2016 issue.

Martin Klier Oracle Magazine 2016

Introducing Martin along with two other renowned technicians – Alex Zaballa and Gustavo Gonzalez – the feature was titled „Firsts and Favorites – Three peers who started early, stayed loyal, and stuck to tech basics“. Martin pointed out, how Oracle Core Technologies forms his daily life, and that Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) was his first love in the Oracle world. It’s easy to understand why – RAC is a highly scalable, sophisticated and reliable business continuity and high availability solution. Implemented into the database core, it provides a scale-out capacity that’s still unique in the market, even after so many years of modern RAC architecture.
