Picking out, validating and improving slow or resource-eating SQL statements is part of any responsible DBA’s work who takes his/her job serious. Identification alone can be tough, but it will be even harder to improve something you have no chance to understand the purpose of. This way, you will never be in the position to improve elapsed time by factors of 1 million or 100.000 – that’s a privilege of the designers and coders. But there is a generic way for us database whisperers to approach bad-behaving SQL, and improve it by factor 2, 5 or 10. Sometimes this is all we will get, so let me show you how: We are avoiding expensive tools, voodoo features, concatenated heuristics and one-engine-fixes-the-other. An unspectacular, real-world, common-sense approach, reaching the goals with grassroots technology.
Objective 1: Understand the basic components of parsing SQL in Oracle Databases
Objective 2: Pick the culprit, understand its execution plan
Objective 3: Weed them out, avoid collateral damage.

About the lecture:
The intention is, to show development teams, administrators and analysts, how beneficial it would be to think about performance at all, and that you’d need code instrumentation (=runtime meta information about application behavior) to get better. Martin will go from general Excellence over costs and implication of changes to the real craftsmanship of performance analysis.

Auf der DOAG Konferenz 2015 trug Martin Klier vor, welche Funktionen und Nutzen das Alert Log bereit hält.(Mittwoch 18.11., 9 Uhr, Raum Seoul)
Die wesentliche Aufgabe eines Oracle Datenbankadministrators oder -operators ist es, in Frieden und Störfall gleichermaßen den Überblick in “seinen” Datenbankinstanzen zu gewinnen und zu behalten. Eine solche Datenbankinstanz besteht aus einer zunächst unübersichtlichen Vielzahl von Speicherbereichen und Prozessen. Bei einer durchschnittlichen 12cR1 Multitenant-Instanz ist so beispielsweise von mindestens 60 Hintergrundprozessen auszugehen. Dazu kommen noch die Server- (Vordergrund-) Prozesse, die für das Bedienen von User-Sessions notwendig sind. Diese Vielzahl von aktiven Komponenten braucht ein klares Konzept, wie Fehlermeldungen den Operator erreichen, und wie man zwischen der bloßen Signalisierung eines Vorfalls und dessen Details abgrenzt.
Daher erläutert der Vortrag, was ich schon immer über das Alert Log wissen wollte: Ein Beitrag über die verschiedenen Formate, die Inhalte, jüngere Oracle-Versionen und die Unterschiede, die sie mit sich bringen, diverse Tools zur Lesbarkeit und was uns das berühmte Logfile nicht liefert. Der Vortrag schließt einen Überblick über die berührten Komponenten im Oracle Datenbanksystem ein, damit der Zuhörer die Herkunft, Bedeutung und Relevanz von (Fehler-)Meldungen abschätzen kann. Ein Crashkurs aus der Praxis nicht nur für Einsteiger, sondern auch für alle, die sich schon einmal gewundert haben.

Auf der DOAG Konferenz 2015 trug Benedikt Nahlovsky vor, wie Oracle Text funktioniert und für welche Einsatzgebiete es sich besonders eignet. (Donnerstag 19.11., 15 Uhr, Raum Seoul)
Im Vortrag über das in allen Datenbank-Editionen kostenlos zur Verfügung stehende Feature “Oracle Text” wurde gezeigt, welche Möglichkeiten Oracle Text zur Volltextsuche bietet und welcher Benefit erreicht werden kann. Abgerundet wurde der Vortrag mit einer Live-Demo.
Ebenso gab es eine Vorschau auf die neuen Features in Datenbank version 12c:

October 27th 2015 Martin Klier talked a quick TED at the Oak Table World 2015 in the Children’s Creativity Museum, San Francisco. The title was „Volkswagen for Oracle Guys“.
It was a twinkle-in-the-eye comparison of two companies, countries, concepts and styles, combined with a pledge to all IT folks to take their responsibilities seriously.
