One of the highlights in early spring is UTOUG Training Days – the on-site event of the Utah Oracle User Group in Salt Lake City, UT, USA. As in the years before, Oracle ACE Director Martin Klier was there in March 2025 too, to give talks and to be part of panels.

Presentation „Gateway to Hell – Network Basics for DBAs, DEVs and DevOps“

New environments are increasingly based on a software-defined data center, both on-premises and in the cloud. However, more conventional approaches also require database administrators or DevOps teams to understand and handle the network stack. Knowledge of this basic technology is more relevant today than ever before – even if, at its core, it is mostly a creation of the 1980s and 90s.
With a twinkle in our eye, we answer the following questions, among others:

  • What’s so great about the Classless Society?
  • What does a salami pizza have to do with network technology?
  • If Superman likes supernetting, who does subnetting?
  • How do nuclear weapons affect network design?
  • If my routes come from the GPS, what do I need a router for?
  • Who has DNS in their DNA?

We would like to invite all DBAs, developers and DevOperators to rediscover the basics of network technology with us. Everything seen through the practical eyes of experienced, strictly practice-oriented database experts. The lecture is therefore aimed at experienced IT professionals who (only) have little to do with network technology in their day-to-day work and would like to widen their view.

Presentation „Hard Road to Hardening: CIS Benchmarks and Linux Security for Beginners“

This is our project report about hardening project systems running Linux as a backend for the Oracle Database. Being long-time Linux and Oracle professionals, out of the blue we found ourselves tasked with a strangely nontechnical technical issue. Despite all experience, we were bewildered by all that was to learn in the security domain, to put it mildly!

This is a story of criminal threats, self-imposed limitations, calculated risks, hidden dangers, familiar habits, external pressures, real-world challenges, practical applications, performance, overhead, tools, and the big question: Who will maintain this?

Join us, as we explore the journey towards enhanced security — and the trade-offs that come with it.

Do not run-away! Oracle Performance for the Uncertain

Abstract

It’s eternal. Autonomous Database yes, Self-driving maybe – at the end, one of us has to put boots on the ground if there are shortcomings in real throughput or latency. In the cloud, analysis is a bit harder, on-premises has a few features less. The Oracle RDBMS is changing, but architecture, the way how it works and its limitations are still very similar on all platforms. One dilemma will stay with us: Using precious and finite resources efficiently, while valuable time passes mercilessly.

With this background, I’d like to show you in theory and practice, how Oracle uses resources. How you can analyze with Oracle’s on-board tools what currently is going on, and how you derive from that how to proceed. There is much to influence the runtime behaviour: We’ll talk about Queueing Theory, Wait Events, AWR/Statspack, ASH, Indexes, Statistics, the optimizer, software developers, users and the janitor.

Even runaways are a topic of this entertaining session: They will bite you one day, and you have to be aware!

This talk was made for experienced Administrators and DevOperators, who want to learn more about about performance analysis and its background.

Sharing Experience from 24 Months of Database Upgrade and Migration

Abstract

Sharing Experience from 24 Months of Database Upgrade and Migration Running out of support, security concerns, new features, coming operating system or hardware changes…. there is a long and versatile list of potential reasons for our customers, to change the version of their running Oracle Databases. The „choice“ of situations, challenges and options for changing the version, is at least as long and as versatile as the reasons are. Oracle ACE Director Martin Klier will deliver an unveiled overview about his adventures with logical dependencies, human sensitivities, technical skulduggeries and license traps. All this happens, when one or multiple databases are to be migrated or upgraded to a new version in a controlled fashion. For A as in AIX, L like Linux, S like Solaris, V like Virtualization, W twice in Windows … there was trouble, there was a solution, and there was a new experience!
